Substance Use & Recovery Resources

Types of Detox

Medically Assisted Detox
In some cases, detoxing from certain drugs requires medication-assisted therapy to help ease the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Medications prescribed during detox are often tapered down until the patient is no longer physically dependent on addictive substances.

Non-Medically Assisted AKA “Social Detox”
Social detox is a viable option for patients whose withdrawal process is deemed manageable without medical intervention. It can be a very effective way to begin the recovery process for people who aren’t at risk of developing life-threatening withdrawal symptoms like seizures or severe dehydration.

Inpatient care and Residential  rehabilitation treatment programs  consist of 24-hour care at a live in facility. Program length ranges from 1 week to 18 months depending on several factors, including the severity of the addiction, and the existence of any co-occurring mental health conditions.

U-turn for Christ-(719) 473-6285

https://www.uturncs.com/

514 N. Wahsatch Ave. Colorado Springs, CO, 80903

U-Turn for Christ is a Christian rehabilitation center with locations throughout the United States. It has over twenty-five years of experience providing a Biblical model of restoration for men and women suffering from the cycle of addiction. The first phase of the program is a two-month discipleship program that features morning devotions, daily chores, healthy fellowship, volunteer work, evening Bible study, and nightly personal devotion time. The second phase of the program is six months long, wherein patients can serve in ministry or return to work and attend church with participants from the first phase of treatment.

Outpatient treatment varies in the types and intensity of services offered. Such treatment costs less than residential, inpatient, and partial hospitalization treatment and often is more suitable for people with jobs or extensive social supports. It should be noted, however, that low-intensity programs may offer little more than drug education.

Intensive Outpatient aka Intensive Day Treatment, can be comparable to residential programs in services and effectiveness, depending on the individual patient’s characteristics and needs. Group counseling can be a major component. Some programs treat patients with co-occuring medical or mental health problems in addition to their drug disorders.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9 am-3 pm). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Addiction, Mental Health, Physical Health

Veterans and AddictionAddiction is a widespread issue in today’s society, and unfortunately it affects veterans at a higher rate than other populations. About one in ten veteran’s turn to alcohol or other addictive substances to help them cope with overwhelming circumstances when returning home. Many are reliving traumatic events and have difficulty readjusting to civilian life. Coping with drugs and alcohol just makes the problems worse. Addiction leads to heart problems, liver failure, cancer, and death.

Veterans and Mental Health-Veterans are at higher risk of mental health problems such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety. Post-traumatic tress disorder (PTSD) is a huge mental health problem facing veterans and can also lead to addiction. Veterans often develop PTSD after experiencing traumatic events in combat.

PTSD causes troubling symptoms such as: being easily startled, difficulty concentrating, increased irritability, nightmares, and flashback

To deal with these symptoms, veterans often use — and abuse — addictive substances. For this reason, PTSD and addiction often occur alongside one another.

According to the VA, almost 1 in 3 veterans who have PTSD also suffer from addiction.
