An individual with dual diagnoses, also known as co-occurring disorders, has both mental health issues and substance abuse disorder occurring simultaneously. When a person has a dual diagnosis, both conditions need to be treated. If only one of these conditions is treated, there’s a good chance the other will get worse. For example, if addiction is treated but mental illness is not, relapse can be more likely.
