Sara Recovery Hero

Hello, my name is Sara Powell. I am a woman in long-term recovery. This past August 30, 2022, I celebrated 5 years in recovery. My kids lived with their dads, I had pushed my family away, I was on intense supervised probation, living out of a storage unit, and completely alone. My probation officer was the first person I decided to try to trust with my situation. He was also the first person in many years who did everything they said they would. From getting me into an inpatient treatment to getting me into sober living to fighting for me when I did slip back into my addiction. I was sentenced to 15 months in Denver’s Women’s Correctional Facility.

I went in on August 30, 2017. I spent 13 years in my addiction pushing people away. I have accomplished so many goals since I started my recovery journey. I would have to say that the thing that I am most proud of is reuniting with my family and my children. Being connected with my family shows me how far I have come. I am a peer recovery coach working at the hospital in the Labor and Delivery department, walking with moms on their path of recovery. Today, thanks to my recovery I also get to be a daughter, sister, mom, and my favorite title is Mimi/ grandma.

I would have to say the thing that I am most proud of is reuniting with my family and my children.
