Detox Information
Medical and Non-Medical “Social” Detox Facilities
-
Medical detox programs most commonly avail a range of medical monitoring and pharmacological interventions (i.e. detox medications) that can help you manage the acute withdrawal period. In the case of alcohol withdrawal, this commonly entails benzodiazepine or other sedative administration to provide symptom management and seizure prophylaxis. Opioid withdrawal management often proceeds with stabilizing opioid agonist medications such as methadone and buprenorphine.
Social detox programs provide short-term, non-medical support during the withdrawal period. Though these programs may include patient monitoring and protocols to escalate the level of care in the event of withdrawal complications, the emphasis of a social detox program is in providing a safe, comfortable place in which to reside, with ample interpersonal support during the withdrawal period.
- Inpatient care and Residential rehabilitation treatment programs consist of 24-hour care at a live in facility. Program length ranges from 1 week to 18 months depending on several factors, including the severity of the addiction, and the existence of any co-occurring mental health conditions.
- The main differences between inpatient, residential treatment, and residential recovery communites are levels of treatment intensity, type of environment, and length of stay. Inpatient treatment requires 24/7 monitoring in facilities that offer acute medical support. Residential rehab centers can include a variety of settings, including treatment communities, halfway houses and long-term supervised accommodations.
